Papers, 1845-1873 (bulk 1861-1865).

Collection consists primarily of letters from Scott's son, Irby Goodwin Scott, while serving in the 12th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A. During the Civil War, Irby Goodwin Scott was a private and later a lieutenant. The letters concern troop movements; home, illness, and death; officers and love of the army; and detail of camp life including construction of quarters, and cooking. He complained of a letter his captain had posted in the home newspaper, "The Countryman," praising the fighting of the men from Eatonton, and not mentioning those from the surrounding areas. He also ridiculed the Va. newspaper for claiming credit for Va. troops. Papers prior to 1861 consist of family correspondence, papers relating to Irby Scott's administration of estates of Giles and John Tompkins, and a letter concerning the harboring of runaway slaves in Mrs. Giles Tompkins' home. After 1865, the papers deal mainly with business matters including a contract with freedmen on Irby Scott's farm. Other papers include several letters from Nicholas Ewing Scott concerning army life; and letters from Benjaming Harvey Hill concerning legal affairs.
